Ever since our junior school years, we were taught about how good it was to be an “all rounded” individual who can fit in any sector or environment. In other words, we were encouraged to be jacks of all trades. Today, these kinds of people are termed “flexible” professionals.
But what if all we were taught in school has been overtaken by events – We know too well that yesterday’s solutions are unlikely to solve today’s problems, right?
Well, the truth is, it is easy to find a jack of all trades, but the same cannot be said about finding an expert.
And I strongly believe that specialists are better placed to add more value to any sector as compared to their generalist counterparts.
In this post, I’ll tell you why you’re better off working with a specialist and not generalist.
Specialists are normally focused on specific areas of their expertise; if, for instance, you engage an accounting tax specialist in your business, he/she will focus wholly on getting the task at hand accomplished. They will get in and get the work done fast and with minimal distractions since all they ever do is work on the issues on different occasions.
Value for Money
Truth be told; when dealing with generalists, they’re likely to be doing things on a trial and error basis. But sadly, the nature of businesses in this day and age doesn’t grant anyone the luxury of making mistakes that could otherwise have been avoided. And these mistakes cost money and time.
As much as you may be able to replace money lost on a consultancy gone-wrong, you simply can’t buy back the time lost.
Consider this; if a generalist’s chance of not delivering value was to be gauged at 6 on a scale of 1 to 10, guess where the specialist’s score would be.
Deep Understanding of Underlying Issues
Let’s face it – people who tend to try their hand in anything and everything end up being a jack of all trades but a master of none. In fact, in the long run, they end up spreading themselves too thin. This makes them have a very shallow understanding of everything.
A specialist, on the other hand, is better placed to understand and provided a sure way of dealing with certain issues in their areas of specialization. They are likely to not only provide you with solutions but also preventive measures too and of course, the cause of the problem in the first place.
